시장의 인사말은 단순히 영어에 대한 지식 부족만을 탓할 수 없는 무성의 그 자체로 지역에 대한 상식이 전혀 없는 이가 작성한 것으로 보인다.
예를 들어 인사말 도입 부분부터 '12만 김제시민'을 '120 thousands of citizens'로 잘못 쓰는가 하면(이는 '120 thousand citizens'가 맞다), '천년고찰 금산사'의 표현에서도 시제를 무시하고 ago와 before를 혼동하고 있으며, 모악산을 호남에서 가장 유명한 산이라고 밝히고 있다.
'환황해권'의 경우 우리는 서해로 쓰지만 외국인 기준은 황해가 돼야 하는데도 서해(west sea)로 썼고, 그 표현도 어색하다.
특히 김제를 대표하는 벽골제가 관개 수리시설임에도 '사물을 고치는 수리 시설'(repair work facility)로 표현하더니, 궁중에 진상했다는 심포 백합을 '백합꽃'(lily flower)라고 표기하는 웃지 못할 일이 벌어져 있다.
온천은 hot spring이 맞으나 hot sprint로 써서 뜻을 다르게 했으며, 온통 틀린 문장과 비문법적인 문장으로 가득차 있다.
중간에는 김제를 소개하는 한 단락이 17줄의 긴 한 문장으로 이뤄져 의미 전달이 어렵고, 지역에 대한 기본 지식이 없는 외국인의 특성을 배려하지 않는 지명들이 아무런 설명없이 적혀있는 현실이다.
그러나 엉터리 인사말의 말미에는 자랑스럽게도 "김제시는 한차원 높은 친절한 서비스와 넉넉한 인심으로 여러분을 편안하게 안내하기 위하여 홈페이지를 새롭게 단장했다"고 쓰고 있다.
시민의 생활모습(Citizen's Life Style)에서도 인구 368명(person)당 1명인 의사수를 368'구역'(area)당 1명으로, 혼인도 1일(per day) 2.8쌍을 '2.8쌍당'(per 2.8pair) 2.8쌍이라는 등으로 엉터리 표기를 하고 있다.
행정구역 또한 한글이나 한문이 영문으로 번역되지 않은 채 그대로 방치된 상태다.
김제시민을 대표하는 김제시장의 인사말이 외국인들에게 무식하다는 인상을 심어주지 않을지 우려된다.

Our village Gimje-si, which will lead the future of new millenium as a central key city of the 21C circular-west sea zone era, have respected fidelity, filial duty and courtesy since the early era, and there are Geumsan temple which is holy ground of Buddhist saint and constructed more than a thousand year before and sited at the hem of Moak mountain which is the most famous mountain in Honam, and also in there constructed Byeokgoljae where is the originating place of rice agricultural culture and is the oldest repair work facility in the Orient, taking spacious Geumman plain, which is a spacious plain and where skyline can be seen and which is the biggest grain belt in Honam, as a background, it make a boast of the biggest production of rice from all over the country, including the nourishing skyline rice, grape, pear and lily flower which are produced as regional speciality from scenically beautiful and wealthy earth and presented to the king, there are various tasty food, favor, object of interest and amusement, and at the basis of abundant resource, it has continuously developed to the center of western times.
Now Gimje-si, the Vision of the Future, prepares plentiful event such as combined festival which takes as theme these various information which have carried on the traditional pulse of various culture and art, Gimje hot sprint which contain mystic germanium, first class older's welfare town from all over the country, golden field over the ground of wider Geumman plain around the western sea, the horizon of the western sea which is the only and natural advantageous land of mystery, and Simpo harbor, Nakjodae, Manghaesa which are famous for sun set and the skyline

위 인사말을 지적해 본다
먼저 가장 간단한 단수, 복수의 개념조차 유의치 않는다. '12만 시민'은 '120 thousands of citizens', '천년'은 'a thousand year', '푸짐한 행사'는 'plentiful event', '각종 정보'는 'these various information'으로 썼다. Thousands of 와 thousand 의 차이는 크다. 또 천년은 물론 푸짐한 행사는 당연히 복수이어야 하고, 정보라는 단어는 복수를 쓰지 않으니 앞의 지시어 these는 맞지 않다.
둘째, '천년고찰 금산사'는 'Geumsan temple which is constructed more than a thousand year before'로 씌어있는데 이것은 'Geumsan temple which was constructed more than a thousand years ago'이어야 할 것이다. 과거와 현재의 시제 개념도 없고 before와 ago의 구별도 없다.
셋째, '호남의 명산인 모악산'은 'Moak mountain which is the most famous mountain in Honam'이다. 이 영문은 외국인을 대상으로 쓴 글이라는 생각은 전혀 하지 않는다. 느닷없이 호남이라 하면 어디를 지칭하는 것인지 전혀 언급도 없을 뿐만 아니라 모악산이 호남에서 가장 유명한 산이다는 거짓 정보를 제공하고 있다. 이 문장은 'Mt. Moak, which is one of the most famous mountains in Honam (Jeolla Province)'로 바꿔 주어야 하겠다.
넷째, 환황해권시대'를 영어로 옮기기 위해 한영사전을 그대로 이용한 듯한 표현 'circular-west sea zone era'같은 실수는 차치하더라도, '동양최대의 가장 오래된 수리시설인 벽골제'가 'Byeokgoljae is the oldest repair work facility in the Orient,'로 되어있다. '수리시설'을 'repair work facility'라고 쓴 셈이다. 우리가 자랑하는 동양최고의 관개 수리시설인 벽골제가 사물을 고치는 수리 시설이라니, 이런 문제는 다음 문장에서도 찾아볼 수 있다. '궁중에 진상 되었던 기름진 지평선쌀과 포도, 배, 백합' 'the nourishing skyline rice, grape, pear and lily flower which are produced as regional speciality from scenically beautiful and wealthy earth and presented to the king,' 김제가 자랑하는 궁중 진상품 백합이 백합꽃이었던가?
다섯째, '신비의 게르마늄이 함유된 김제 온천'은 'Gimje hot sprint which contain mystic germanium'이다. 'Sprint'는 'spring'을 잘못 쓴 것일 것이며 다음의 동사 contain에는 3인칭 단수의 s도 빠져버렸다.
여섯째, '서해안의 수평선과 낙조로 유명한 심포항과 낙조대 망해사' 'Simpo harbor, Nakjodae, Manghaesa which are famous for sun set and the skyline' 다시 한번 외국인 네티즌은 어리둥절해질 것이다. 심포항은 대략 항구인지 알겠지만 낙조대와 망해사는 도대체 무엇이기에 낙조와 수평선으로 유명하다는 것인가?
마지막으로, '우리 김제시에 대한 깊은 사랑과 관심을 가져주신 네티즌 여러분에게 시대의 동반자로서 다시 한번 감사를 드리며' 'I would sincerely thank again you netizen as our companion because of your deep love and interest for our Gimje-si,'에서 'would'는 불필요하고 'thank again you'는 어순이 틀렸고 'because of'는 'for'로 대치하여야 할 것이다.
이밖에도 나누어서 지적할 수 없는 문장내의 문제점은 산적해있다. 김제를 소개하는 한 단락이 17줄의 긴 한 문장으로 이루어져 있으니 그 긴 호흡과 전달되지 않는 의미 전달을 일일이 옮겨 적기도 힘들 정도이다. 역설적이게도 인사말의 말미에 김제시는 '한차원 높은 친절한 서비스와 넉넉한 인심으로 여러분을 편안하게 안내하기 위하여 홈페이지를 새롭게 단장하였으니' 'we refurnished our homepage in order to guide you conveniently with an elevated level of kind service and broad mind,' 라고 쓰고 있다.

김제시는 21C 환황해권시대 중심의 핵심도시로서 새천년의 미래를 이끌어갈 우리고장은 예로부터 충(忠), 효(孝), 예(藝)를 숭상하였으며, 호남의 명산인 모악산 자락에 천년고찰의 미륵성지인 금산사와 도작 문화의 발상지이며 동양최대의 가장 오래된 수리시설인 벽골제가 위치한 곳이며, 드넓은 평야로서 지평선을 바라볼 수 있는 호남최대의 곡창 지대인 광활한 금만평야를 배경으로 전국 최대의 쌀생산량을 자랑하며 산자수려하고 풍족한 땅에서 지역특산품으로 생산되는 「궁중에 진상 되었던 기름진 지평선쌀과 포도, 배, 백합」 등 맛과 멋과 볼거리와 놀거리가 다양하고, 풍부한 자원을 바탕으로 서해안 시대의 중심지로 발전을 거듭해 왔습니다.
We hope Gimje-si will lead the future of a new millennium as a central key city of the 21C Pan-Yellow Sea era. Since the earliest times we have heartily respected fidelity, filial duty and courtesy. And we have Geumsan temple which is a holy grounds of Buddhist saints. It was constructed more than a thousand years ago and located at the foot of Mt. Moak, which is one of the most famous mountains in Honam (Jeolla Province), and there is also Byeokgolje, which was the oldest and biggest irrigation facility in Asia and the origin of Korean rice farming culture. In addition, we are very proud of the vast Geumman plain, the only place in Korea where you can see the long skyline and consequently we boast the biggest rice production and the highest rice quality in all over the country. We also produce grapes, pears, and Baekhap (a kind of shellfish) which have been farmed as regional specialties from beautiful and rich fields and sea and were particularly presented to the ancient kings. We also have other various Korean tasty food and activities of interest and amusement based on the ancient Korean agriculture. With the basis of abundant agricultural and marine resources, we have continuously developed to the center of the western coast of Korea.

And we take great pride in the golden field with riped rice on the vast Geumman plain against the horizon of the west coast.
